INTRODUCTION
Syamsundar college library: a brief
profile gives an overall view of the library facilities and activities of the
library. At present the library
is fully automated through KOHA: open source software. Databases of books are
being updated. With the combined
efforts of the staff members of the library we are trying to meet the demands
of the users by rendering various services.
HISTORY:
Syamsundar College was founded by late ‘Raibahadur’ Bishalaksha Bose, the distinguished social
worker of the Raina- Shyamsundar locality on 12th August 1948, a
view to open a gateway of higher education.
Former ministers of the Govt. of West Bengal Abdus Sattar, Kalipada Mukherjee
and Prafulla Chandra Sen and renowned freedom fighter such as Jadabendra Nath
Panja helped a lot in establishing the college at Shyamsundar. Late
Prafulla Chandra Sen, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal became the first
President of Governing Body of the college. Mr. Shib Mohan Bose, the highly
qualified son of ‘Raibhadur’ Bishalaksha Bose had been appointed as the first
principal of the college. In 1956 the college was notified as a Govt. Sponsored
Degree College in the Education Gazette. The college has 17 under graduate departments.
In 2005, the college had become UGC-NAAC accreditation and obtained B+ status
at the first circle.
ABOUT THE LIBRARY:
Syamsundar College Library was started along with the
establishment of the institution in 1948 in order to cater the academic and
research needs of the faculty, students and non-teaching staff. But the systematic Accession Register was started
from 1957.
The library is situated at the 1st floor of the
Golden Jubilee Bhaban. Books are well arranged and organized according to Class
No. Manuscript, Rare books and Confined
books are separated from general stock. The books are classified according to
the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) 22nd edition with extreme
care to the subject matter. Recently purchased books are being updated on the
day to day basis through Library Management Software KOHA. Moreover books relating to different
competitive examination for career/services, general knowledge and other
documents are separately available. Its
shelf space and working space is a total of 3894.8 sq. ft. and seating
accommodation for 40 students. Security system like surveillance camera has
been installed in the library.
All
Honours departments are also equipped with Departmental libraries containing
the books commonly needed by the students of the subject. Reading and lending
facilities as appropriate are available in the Departmental Libraries. The Departmental library’s collection of books generally consists of specimen copy from
publishers and loaned from the Central Library. Departmental libraries are constantly
used by the teachers and regular students of that department only for the enhancement of teaching and learning.
COLLECTIONS:
At present, the library has 36498 (as
on 30/06/2016) volumes of books on various subjects with 11615 titles and 116
bound volumes of journals and non-book materials such as CD, DVD, pamphlets, and
atlas. A considerable part of the Library’s collection consists of gifts from
individuals and other educational institutions like Central Institute of Indian
languages.
The Library has 12 journals out of which subscribes 7 and gifted
5 and 5 magazines. Three newspapers in English and Bengali languages are subscribed.
It has 331 valuable PUTHIS on various concepts. Apart from this the Library
users can access to around 80000 online journals and 6000 online books through NLIST programme.
